The Ancient city of Salona
Split and Trogir
Protected by the walls that surround an area of about 30.000 square km, the palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, built between the 3rd and the 4th century, covers one part of the old city, where most refugee families came to take shelter as they were chased from Salona at the beginning of the 7th century.
Although many parts of the palace were rebuilt and reconstructed, the major part of the Roman imperial palace still makes an imposing part of the city.
The ancient city of Salona was the capital of Dalmatia, during the period of the Roman Empire. Today you can see there its ancient ruins, together with the ruins from the early Christianity, theatre from the 2nd century, numerous sarcophagi, amphitheatre and the Episcopal church.
Situated on a small peninsula, the city of Trogir was built in the 14th and the 15th centuries.
Its small narrow streets with old palaces, churches and especially the cathedral of St.Lawrence were enough for the old city to become registered on the list of UNESCO’s world cultural heritage.
